Pole Barn Pad Site Preparation in Ohio
A pole barn only performs as well as the ground it is built on. Post-frame buildings do not sit on a continuous poured foundation the way a house does, so the pad underneath carries the load, sheds the water, and keeps the posts from heaving or settling for the life of the building.
BS Farms & Contracting has been building pads for pole barns, machine sheds, and other ag and shop buildings across west-central Ohio for 17+ years. We own our own excavation and grading equipment, run it with our own crew, and the owner is on most jobs personally.
A pole barn's posts are set into the ground or onto piers, and the pad between them is what the floor, the equipment, and the stored inventory actually sit on. Compaction matters more without a continuous footer to carry the load, and drainage has to be built into the pad itself since most pole barns sit in open fields with no municipal storm system nearby.

Topsoil stripping and stockpiling
Topsoil and root material will not compact and will not support a structure long-term, so it comes off first and gets stockpiled on site for later landscaping use.

Structural fill placed and compacted in layers
Fill goes down in lifts, not all at once, and each layer is compacted before the next goes on. This is the step that gets skipped by crews in a hurry, and it is the one that determines whether the pad holds up.

Elevation set above surrounding grade, with a crown
We set the pad several inches above the surrounding ground and shape it to shed water away from the building rather than toward it, so you are not building in a low spot that ponds every spring.

Stone base placement and finishing
A finished stone base gives you a stable surface to build on right away, whether the builder is setting posts the same week or the slab gets poured later.

Permitting depends on your county and township and on how the building will be used, since agricultural exemptions often apply differently than a shop or residential accessory building. We coordinate with the relevant county health district and building department as part of the job.
It depends on footprint size and how much fill the site needs, but most pole barn pads are ready for the building crew within a few working days once weather cooperates. We give a real timeline once we have walked the site.
We handle the excavation, fill, compaction, and stone base. If your project includes a poured slab, we coordinate timing with your concrete contractor so the pad is ready and cured before they pour.
That is exactly what the crown and elevation step in our process are for. If the property has a known wet spot or runoff issue, tell us before we start and we will grade around it.
Yes. We regularly prep pads ahead of post-frame and pole barn kit installers and can work around their delivery and crew schedule.
